Meeting No. 20

Thursday, June 10, 2010

The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Vice-Chair, Hon. Bryon Wilfert, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Ray Boughen, Peter Braid, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Laurie Hawn, Hon. Keith Martin, Pascal-Pierre Paillé, LaVar Payne and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Wolfgang Koerner, Analyst.

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: BGen Bernard Blaise Cathcart, Judge Advocate General, Canadian Forces.

Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the Order in Council appointment of Bernard Blaise Cathcart to the position of Judge Advocate General of the Canadian Forces which was referred to the Committee on Wednesday, May 5, 2010.

Brigadier-General Bernard Blaise Cathcart made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:15 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:18 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Committee hold a press conference on Thursday, June 17, 2010 to coincide with the presentation of the Committee’s report on Arctic sovereignty to the House of Commons and that one representative from the Committee from each political party be present.

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 concerning navy operational budgets, the Committee request that the Minister of National Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff prepare a written submission responding to the motion for consideration by the members of the Committee.

At 12:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
