The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 8:45 a.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen St., the Chair, Candice Hoeppner, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Josée Beaudin, Hon. Rick Casson, Raymonde Folco, Candice Hoeppner, Ed Komarnicki, Yves Lessard, Tony Martin, Hon. Maria Minna, Michael John Savage, Maurice Vellacott, Jeff Watson and Alice Wong.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Gruescu, Analyst; André Léonard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada: Cindy Blackstock, Executive Director. National Association of Friendship Centres: Conrad Saulis, Policy Director. Adoption Council of Canada: Laura Eggertson, Board Member. As individuals: Joy Loney; Dan Loney; Jennifer Lewis.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of the Federal Support Measures to Adoptive Parents.
 

Cindy Blackstock and Conrad Saulis made statements and answered questions.

 

At 9:39 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:45 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Laura Eggertson, Joy Loney, Dan Loney and Jennifer Lewis made statements and answered questions.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Michael John Savage moved, — That the Committee requests that the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development appear before the Committee for two hours as soon as possible to discuss the Conservative government's new policy of eliminating a senior citizens' ability to exempt Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIF) from the calculation of GIS eligibility through the use of the "option provision" as otherwise allowed in the Old Age Security Act and the consequences this will have on seniors who receive Guaranteed Income Supplement(GIS) payments.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 10:44 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
