The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 8:38 a.m. this day, at the Grand Lake Road Volunteer Fire Department, Sydney, Nova Scotia, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Scott Andrews, Raynald Blais, Hon. Gerry Byrne, Fin Donnelly, Randy Kamp, Tilly O'Neill-Gordon and Rodney Weston.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Eastern Shore Fishermen's Protective Association: Norma Richardson, President; Nellie Baker Stevens, Coordinator. Multi-species Crab License Holders: Josephine Kennedy, Representative, Eastern Nova Scotia Crab Fishing Area 23; Clarence Sehl, Representative, Eastern Nova Scotia Crab Fishing Area 23, Bay Boy Fisheries. Port Morien, False Bay Fishermen's Association: Bernie MacDonald, President. Area 23 Snow Crab Fishermen's Association: Gordon MacDonald, President and Managing Director; Fred Kennedy, Consultant. Eskasoni First Nation: Leonard Denny, Chief Executive Officer, Crane Cove Seafoods. Gardner Pinfold Consulting Economists Ltd.: Michael Gardner, President. Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources: Hubert Nicholas, Commercial Fisheries Liaison Coordinator. Government of Nova Scotia: Greg Roach, Assistant Deputy Minister, Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of the snow crab industry in Atlantic Canada and Quebec.
 

Norma Richardson, Josephine Kennedy and Bernie MacDonald made a statement.

 

Nellie Baker Stevens, Josephine Kennedy and Bernie MacDonald answered questions.

 

At 9:45 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:03 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Gordon MacDonald, Leonard Denny, Michael Gardner and Hubert Nicholas made a statement and, with Fred Kennedy, answered questions.

 

At 11:32 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:49 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Greg Roach made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:49 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
