The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met by videoconference at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Ray Boughen, Dona Cadman, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Anita Neville and Michelle Simson.

 

Acting Members present: Rob Clarke for Tilly O'Neill-Gordon.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations: Patricia Schuster, Executive Director, Saskatchewan First Nations' Women's Commission. First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada: Cindy Blackstock, Executive Director. Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Sheilagh Murphy, Director General, Social Policy and Programs Branch; Corinne Baggley, Senior Policy Analyst, Social Programs Reform Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 8, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of violence against Aboriginal women.
 

Patricia Schuster, by videoconference from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Cindy Blackstock made statements and Cindy Blackstock answered questions.

 

At 12:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Sheilagh Murphy made a statement and, with Corinne Baggley, answered questions.

 

At 12:55 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:56 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That a news release be prepared by the Analysts and the Clerk, in consultation with the Chair, for publication on the Committee's website and for distribution upon presentation to the House of the report on the cancellation of the mandatory long form census and its impact on women's equality in Canada.

 

At 1:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
