The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met by videoconference at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room 752, 131 Queen St., the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Dean Allison, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, Francine Lalonde, James Lunney, Bernard Patry, Hon. Bob Rae and Dave Van Kesteren.

 

Acting Members present: Scott Armstrong for Deepak Obhrai, Claude Guimond for Francine Lalonde and Hon. John McKay for Glen Douglas Pearson.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Andrew Lauzon. Library of Parliament: James Lee; Allison Goody.

 

Witnesses: Revenue Watch Institute: Karin Lissakers. Amnesty International: Shanta Martin, International Secretariat. International Council on Mining and Metals: Robert Anthony Hodge. Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Shirley-Ann George, Policy.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, March 3, 2010, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-300, An Act respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries.
 

Karin Lissakers, by videoconference from New York, Shanta Martin and Robert Anthony Hodge, by videoconference from London, United Kingdom, and Shirley-Ann George, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:47 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 12:52 p.m., the Committee resumed sitting in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the meeting of Thursday, May 27, 2010, be cancelled due to the attendance by members of the Committee at the Address of the President of Mexico, to be delivered in the House of Commons at 10 a.m..

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to resume its study of the Group of Eight (G8) Summit with a focus on the Maternal and Child Health Initiative.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet on Thursday, June 3, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to resume consideration of Bill C-300, An Act respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries; and on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to commence its clause by clause study of the Bill.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet on Thursday, June 10, 2010, and Tuesday, June 15, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to study its draft report on the situation at Rights & Democracy (International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development).

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Hon. Peter Ken, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), to meet with the Committee on Thursday, June 17, 2010, in order to discuss recent developments in Honduras; and, time permitting, that the Committee begin the study of the report adopted by its Subcommittee on International Human Rights on human rights in Iran.

 

At 1:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
