The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 8:52 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Lee Richardson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Ron Cannan, John Cannis, Claude Guimond, Ed Holder, Peter Julian, Gerald Keddy, Lee Richardson, Mario Silva and Brad Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Scott Andrews for Martha Hall Findlay, André Bellavance for Jean-Yves Laforest and Hon. Bob Rae for Martha Hall Findlay.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Alexandre Gauthier, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Cavendish Farms: Ron Clow, General Manager. Dairy Farmers of Canada: Richard Doyle, Executive Director. As an individual: Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair, Internet and E-commerce Law, University of Ottawa.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of free trade between Canada and the European Union.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:08 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:12 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study on: the $130 million paid by the federal government to Abitibi Bowater as a settlement of its claim under NAFTA’s investor state provisions (Chapter 11), the impact of this settlement on future democratic decisions taken in the public interest by Canadian governments at all levels and that the Committee report its findings to the House, and that no more than two (2) meetings be dedicated to hearing witnesses on this study.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study on the impact on commerce of the current dispute between the Government of Canada and the Government of the United Arab Emirates and that the witnesses invited include but not be limited to: the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, and that the Committee report its findings to the House of Commons, and that no more than two (2) meetings be dedicated to hearing witnesses on this study.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee travel to Washington, D.C. from Monday, February 28, 2011 to Thursday, March 3, 2011, inclusively, in relation to its study of Canada-United States trade relations.

 

At 10:46 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
