The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 8-53, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Scott Armstrong, Patrick Brown, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Bonnie Crombie, Dean Del Mastro, Royal Galipeau, Carole Lavallée, Roger Pomerleau, Blake Richards and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Larry Bagnell for Scott Simms.

 

Associate Members present: David Tilson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission: Tom Pentefountas, Vice-Chair (Appointee). Privy Council Office: Eileen Boyd, Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet, Senior Personnel; Joyce Henry, Director, Appointments and Selection Processes, Senior Personnel. Department of Canadian Heritage: Claudette Lévesque, Director, Portfolio Policy and Governance.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, the Committee commenced its study of the appointment of Tom Pentefountas as Vice-Chair (Broadcasting) of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).
 

Tom Pentefountas made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:30 p.m., pursuant to Standing Order 115(5), the sitting was suspended.

At 5:20 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Carole Lavallée moved, — That the following motion be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity: that the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage call the Heritage Minister to immediately relieve Athanasios Pentefountas of his duties as full-time Commissioner and Vice-Chair (Broadcasting) of the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

 

Debate arose.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
