The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:01 a.m. this day, in the Adam Ballroom, Delta Guelph Hotel & Conference Centre, Guelph, Ontario, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: André Bellavance, Hon. Wayne Easter, Randy Hoback, Larry Miller, Bev Shipley and Francis Valeriote.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge.

Witnesses: University of Guelph: Michael J. Emes, Dean, College of Biological Science; Rene Van Acker, Professor and Associate Dean, Department of Plant Agriculture; Manish N. Raizada, Associate Professor, International Relations Officer, Department of Plant Agriculture. Monsanto Canada Inc.: Derek Penner, President and General Manager; Mike McGuire, East Sales, Marketing Lead. As an individual: Frank Ingratta, President, Ingratta Innovations Inc.. Nutrasource Diagnostics Inc.: William J. Rowe, President and Chief Executive Officer. Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers' Association: John Kelly, Vice President, Erie Innovations. University of Guelph: Steven Rothstein, Professor, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Advanced Foods and Materials Network: Allan Paulson, Associate Scientific Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of the biotechnology industry.

Michael J. Emes, Rene Van Acker, Manish N. Raizada, Derek Penner, Frank Ingratta, William J. Rowe, John Kelly, Steven Rothstein and Allan Paulson made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:48 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 12:06 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
