The Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan met in camera at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Claude Bachand, Garry Breitkreuz, Bob Dechert, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Jean Dorion, Jack Harris, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Greg Kerr, Deepak Obhrai, Hon. Bob Rae and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Colin Mayes for Greg Kerr.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Julie Pelletier, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan: H.E. Jawed Ludin, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Canada. CARE Canada: Kieran Green, Communications Manager; Jennifer Rowell, Policy and Advocacy Coordinator.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of National Defence and the Chief of the Defence Staff to appear on Wednesday, October 27, 2010, to speak to developments affecting the conduct of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.

 

At 3:42 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 3:43 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, March 3, 2010, the Committee resumed its study on the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.
 

The Ambassador made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:40 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:43 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Kieran Green and Jennifer Rowell made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
