The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met in a televised videoconference session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Bruce Stanton, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Larry Bagnell, Rob Clarke, Jean Crowder, Earl Dreeshen, John Duncan, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, Greg Rickford, Todd Norman Russell and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Hedy Fry for Hon. Anita Neville and Devinder Shory for LaVar Payne.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Ralph Goodale.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst; Tonina Simeone, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Association of University Teachers: James L. Turk, Executive Director. Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations: Guy Lonechild, Chief; Dorothy Myo, Special Advisor to the Chief. First Nations University Academic Council: Randy Lundy, Chair. First Nations University of Canada Student Association: Diane J. Adams, Representative. University of Regina: Vianne Timmons, President and Vice-Chancellor; Gary Boire, Vice-President Academic. Government of Saskatchewan: Hon. Rob Norris, Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour. Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Christine Cram, Assistant Deputy Minister, Education and Social Development Programs and Partnerships Sector. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of the First Nations University of Canada.
 

Chief Guy Lonechild, Dorothy Myo, Diane J. Adams, Vianne Timmons, Gary Boire, Randy Lundy and James L. Turk made statements and answered questions.

 

John Duncan moved, — That the sitting be suspended until 6:00 p.m.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

At 5:18 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:28 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Hon. Rob Norris, by videoconference from Regina, made a statement and answered questions.

 

Christine Cram and Del Anaquod made statements and answered questions.

 

Lorne Dennis, by videoconference from Edmonton, made a statement and answered questions.

 

Nikki Macdonald and Christopher Lalonde, by videoconference from Victoria, made statements and answered questions.

 

John Duncan moved, — That the Committee do now adjourn.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 4.

 

At 7:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
