The Subcommittee on Food Safety of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 4:06 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Malcolm Allen, David Anderson, André Bellavance, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Hon. Wayne Easter, Larry Miller and Bev Shipley.

 

Other Members present: Brian Storseth.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Listeriosis Investigative Review Secretariat: Sheila Weatherill, Independent Investigator. Senate of Australia: Hon. Bill Heffernan, Senator. Public Health Agency of Canada: David Butler-Jones, Chief Public Health Officer; Mark Raizenne, Director General, Centre for Food-borne, Environmental and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (CFEZID); Frank Plummer, Scientific Director General, National Microbiology Laboratory. Department of Health: Morris Rosenberg, Deputy Minister; Jeff Farber, Director, Bureau of Microbial Hazards, Health Products and Food Branch; Meena Ballantyne, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Products and Food Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Order of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food made Thursday, February 12, 2009 and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, the Subcommittee resumed its study of food safety.
 

Sheila Weatherill made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:45 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:48 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Honourable Bill Heffernan made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 6:10 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:19 p.m., the sitting resumed in a televised session.

 

David Butler-Jones and Morris Rosenberg made statements and, with Frank Plummer, Jeff Farber, Meena Ballantyne and Mark Raizenne, answered questions.

 

At 6:46 p.m., Wayne Easter took the Chair.

 

At 6:50 p.m., Larry Miller took the Chair.

 

At 8:02 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
