The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met in a televised session at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, David Anderson, Leon Benoit, Paule Brunelle, Nathan Cullen, Hon. Geoff Regan, Alan Tonks and Bradley R. Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Kelly Block for Devinder Shory, Ed Fast for Russ Hiebert, Cheryl Gallant for Mike Allen, Mark Holland for Hon. Navdeep Bains, Luc Malo for France Bonsant, Thomas J. Mulcair for Nathan Cullen and Todd Norman Russell for Hon. Geoff Regan.

 

Associate Members present: Cheryl Gallant.

 

Other Members present: Thomas J. Mulcair.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst; Mohamed Zakzouk, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Atomic Energy of Canada Limited: Hugh MacDiarmid, President and Chief Executive Officer; Bill Pilkington, Senior Vice-President and Chief Nuclear Officer. Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission: Michael M. Binder, President; Peter Elder, Director General, Directorate of Nuclear Cycle and Facilities Regulation.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the Atomic Energy Canada Limited facility at Chalk River and the status of the production of medical isotopes.
 

Hugh MacDiarmid and Bill Pilkington made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:22 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:25 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Michael M. Binder made a statement and, with Peter Elder, answered questions.

 

At 5:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:13 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
