The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Shawn Murphy, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David Christopherson, Bonnie Crombie, Luc Desnoyers, Meili Faille, Hon. Shawn Murphy, Yasmin Ratansi, Andrew Saxton, Bev Shipley, John Weston and Terence Young.

 

Acting Members present: Larry Miller for Daryl Kramp.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Alex Smith, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Auditor General of Canada: Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada; Neil Maxwell, Assistant Auditor General; Dale Shier, Principal. Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Carole Swan, President; Brian Evans, Executive Vice-President; Paul Mayers, Associate Vice-President, Programs; Stephen Baker, Vice-President, Finance, Administration and Information Technology.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(g) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, the Committee commenced consideration of Chapter 4, "Managing Risks to Canada's Plant Resources - Canadian Food Inspection Agency" of the December 2008 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.
 

Sheila Fraser and Carole Swan made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 
David Christopherson gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee request that the Auditor General of Canada examine the awarding of a contract by Canada Post to Purolator Courier Ltd for air mail services, including whether the contract should have been awarded through a public tender process.

 

At 5:18 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
