The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Maxime Bernier, Ray Boughen, Peter Braid, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Laurie Hawn, Pascal-Pierre Paillé, LaVar Payne and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger for Hon. Anita Neville and Sukh Dhaliwal for Hon. Denis Coderre.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Miriam Burke, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst; Wolfgang Koerner, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami: Mary Simon, President; John Merritt, Senior Policy Advisor .

 
The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Laurie Hawn, it was agreed, — That Hon. Maxime Bernier be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the Vice-Chairs.

 

On motion of Mauril Bélanger, it was agreed, — That Hon. Bryon Wilfert be elected First Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

On motion of Pascal-Pierre Paillé, it was agreed, — That Claude Bachand be elected Second Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

Maxime Bernier took the Chair.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Committee resume its study on Arctic Sovereignty.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 23, 2009, the Committee resumed its study on Arctic sovereignty.
 

Mary Simon made a statement and, with John Merritt, answered questions.

 

At 10:31 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:35 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That representatives from the Office of the Coordinator for 2010 Olympics and G8 Security (Privy Council Office) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police be asked to appear along with representatives from the Department of National Defence regarding the security program for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

 

At 10:38 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
