The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Hon. Maxime Bernier, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Maxime Bernier, Steven Blaney, Ray Boughen, Hon. Denis Coderre, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Laurie Hawn, Hon. Anita Neville, Pascal-Pierre Paillé, LaVar Payne and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Alexandra Mendes for Hon. Anita Neville.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst; Wolfgang Koerner, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: George Da Pont, Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard; René Grenier, Deputy Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard. Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Danielle Labonté, Director General, Northern Strategic Priorities; John Kozij, Director, Strategic Policy and Integration Directorate. Department of the Environment: Doug Bancroft, Director, Canadian Ice Service. Department of Natural Resources: Monique Carpentier, Director General, Coordination and Strategic Issues Branch; Don Lemmen, Research Manager, Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, February 23, 2009, the Committee commenced its study on Arctic sovereignty.
 

George Da Pont and Danielle Labonté made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Doug Bancroft and Don Lemmen made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
