Meeting No. 47

The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in camera at 9:31 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Sylvie Boucher, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Shelly Glover, Yvon Godin, Monique Guay, Richard Nadeau, Tilly O'Neill-Gordon, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Lise Zarac.

Other Members present: Royal Galipeau.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst ; Nicolas Auclair, Analyst.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 for the study of the broadcasting and services in French of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.

It was agreed, — That the Committee ask the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to provide the following information and documents to the Committee Clerk before the meeting with the Commissioner of the RCMP:

1- When members of the force are trained, what training documents do they receive and what methods are used to ensure that they can use French, as required by the Official Languages Act?

2- What documents, courses and books are used for training given in French?

3- What is the instructors’ level of bilingualism? How many instructors are there?

4- Are the training schools internal or external? Where are they located and how many of them are there?

5- How is the quality of the training given in French checked and monitored.

It was agreed, — That the Committee express its regrets regarding the departure of Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Committee analyst, and wish to thank him for his excellent work since 2005.

At 9:50 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
