The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, Royal Galipeau, Shelly Glover, Yvon Godin, Monique Guay, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Lise Zarac.

 

Acting Members present: Claude Gravelle for Yvon Godin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: Pierre Daigle, Ombudsman, Office of the Ombudsman; Denis Egglefield, Director of Investigations, National Defence and Canadian Forces Ombudsman.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, the Committee commenced its study of the Official Languages Program Transformation Model and training of francophone recruits in the Canadian Forces.
 

Pierre Daigle made a statement and, with Denis Egglefield, answered questions.

 

On motion of Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, it was agreed, — That the Clerk obtain a copy of a letter from the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Natynczyk, dated January 5, 2009, regarding the proficiency in both French and English as a second language being a key competency for promotions in the Canadian Forces, and that it be sent to members of the Committee as soon as possible.

 

On motion of Daniel Petit, it was agreed, — That the Canadian Forces' Ombudsman send his comments to the Committee regarding the list of documents tabled by the Canadian Forces following a motion adopted by the Committee on April 1, 2008.

 

At 10:40 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
