The Standing Committee on Official Languages met by videoconference at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude JC D'Amours, Royal Galipeau, Shelly Glover, Yvon Godin, Monique Guay, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Lise Zarac.

 

Associate Members present: Claude Gravelle and Larry Miller.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: CBC/Radio-Canada: Hubert T. Lacroix, President and Chief Executive Officer; Sylvain Lafrance, Executive Vice-President, French Services. Fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique: Yves Trudel, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the broadcasting and services in French of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.
 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee be authorized to distribute correspondence letters to the members of the Committee in the language received, and to ensure that such documents are translated and distributed as promptly as possible.

 

Hubert T. Lacroix made a statement and, with Sylvain Lafrance, answered questions.

 

At 10:08 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:15 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Yves Trudel made a statement and answered questions by videoconference from Vancouver, British Columbia.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Pierre Lemieux, — That the Committee invite York University's Glendon Campus to appear for its study on post-secondary institutions and the promotion of bilingualism in Canada.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 6.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Committee invite York University's Glendon Campus to submit a brief for the study on post-secondary institutions and the promotion of bilingualism in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That the National Defence and Canadian Forces Ombudsman meet with the Committee on May 26.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
