The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Ed Fast, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joe Comartin, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Ed Fast, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, Marc Lemay, Réal Ménard, Rob Moore, Brian Murphy, Rick Norlock, Daniel Petit and Brent Rathgeber.

 

Acting Members present: Patrick Brown for Brian Storseth.

 

Associate Members present: Megan Leslie.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Isabelle Duford, Committee Clerk. Library of Parliament: Robin MacKay, Analyst; Dominique Valiquet, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Brian J. Saunders, Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Public Prosecution Service of Canada.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of February 4, 2009, and subsection 4(4) of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, the Committee commenced its study of the proposed appointment of Brian J. Saunders as the Director of Public Prosecutions.
 

Brian J. Saunders made a statement and answered questions.

 

Réal Ménard moved, — That pursuant to the Order of Reference of February 4, 2009, and subsection 4(4) of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, the proposed appointment of Brian J. Saunders to the position of Director of Public Prosecutions be approved and that the Committee report such to the House.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 10; NAYS: 1.

 

At 4:57 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:02 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That upon completion of the study on matters relating to impaired driving, the Committee report its findings to the House.

 

At 5:27 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
