CENTENNIAL FLAME RESEARCH AWARD FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Diane Driedger – Laureate of the 2008-2009 Edition
Ottawa, September 16, 2009 -
The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities choose, on June 16, 2009, Ms. Diane Driedger as its laureate for the 2008-2009 edition of the Centennial Flame Research Award. Ms. Driedger in her application wrote the following:
“I am applying for this award to undertake an important research project in support of the women who have come before me.(...)
In 1985, the Government of Canada brought together seventeen women in Ottawa to talk about the concerns of women with disabilities and to make recommendations to the government of the day - the organisation and the notion of feminist disability was born out of that meeting. Undertaking to properly document this important and historic moment in Canada History and the women who came together that day is the central theme of this proposal.”
According to the Centennial Flame Research Award Act, this monetary award is offered each year to a person with a disability to enable him or her to conduct research and prepare a report on the contributions of one or more Canadians with disabilities to the public life of Canada or the activities of Parliament.
The award, which amounts to $4500.00 for 2009, comes from the money collected from the Centennial Flame monument on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and any money otherwise received as a donation to the Centennial Flame Research Award Fund.
Those interested in more information on this award may consult the Committee's web site or contact the Office of the Clerk of the Committee.
