The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Nicole Demers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Candice Hoeppner, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Hon. Anita Neville, Alice Wong and Lise Zarac.

 

Acting Members present: France Bonsant for Luc Desnoyers and Richard M. Harris for Dave Van Kesteren.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Lara Trehearne, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Human Resources and Skills Development: Martin Green, Director General, Workplace Partnerships Directorate; Éric Parisien, Director, Sector Council Program; Amy Mifflin-Sills, Director, Trades and Apprenticeship Division; Christina Caron, Director, Labour Market Policy Research. Statistics Canada: Christel Le Petit, Chief, Analysis and Special Projects, Labour Statistics Division; Tracey Leesti, Assistant Director, Labour Statistics Division; Yvan Clermont, Assistant Director, Tourism and the Centre for Education Statistics Division; Kathryn McMullen, Chief, Integrated Analysis Section, Tourism and the Centre for Education Statistics Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 1, 2009, the Committee commenced its study on increasing the participation of women in non-traditional occupations.
 

Martin Green, Christel Le Petit and Yvan Clermont made a statement and, with Éric Parisien, Amy Mifflin-Sills, Christina Caron, Tracey Leesti and Kathryn McMullen, answered questions.

 

At 5:02 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Nicole Demers, — That the Committee call on the government to take action on the reports of both Amnesty International and the United Nations regarding the hundreds of young Aboriginal women who have disappeared or been killed over the past 30 years in Canada and that the Committee report this motion to the House as soon as possible.

The debate continued.

 

Cathy McLeod moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words “30 years in Canada” the following: “and also since the Government is already scheduled to report to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women on the issue of Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women, that the Government ensure that the report shall also be submitted to the Committee, and that non-governmental organizations such as Amensty International have access to the said report”.

 

The question was put on the amendment and the result of the vote was announced: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 5.

Whereupon, the Chair voted in the negative.

Accordingly, the amendment was negatived.

 

The question was put on the motion and the results of the vote was announced: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 5.

Whereupon, the Chair voted in the affirmative.

Accordingly, the motion was agreed to.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
