The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 11:16 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Johanne Deschamps, Hon. Hedy Fry, Candice Hoeppner, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Hon. Anita Neville, Tilly O'Neill-Gordon and Lise Zarac.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Navdeep Bains for Hon. Anita Neville.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Catherine Millar, Committee Clerk. Library of Parliament: Shahrzad Mobasher Fard, Analyst; Clara Morgan, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Human Resources and Skills Development: Janice Charette, Deputy Minister; Paul Thompson, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Skills and Employment Branch. Fédération des femmes du Québec: Michèle Asselin, President. Conseil d'intervention pour l'accès des femmes au travail: Ruth Rose-Lizée, Economist. Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women: Jane Stinson, President; Fathiya Wais, Coordinator. Canadian Federation of University Women: Susan Russell, Executive Director; Colleen Burns, Communications Co-ordinator. Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action: Nancy Baroni, Coordinator, Gender Budget; Bonnie Diamond, Co-Chair.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the consequences and effects the current Employment Insurance (EI) programs have on Women in Canada.
 

Janice Charette made a statement and, with Paul Thompson, answered questions.

 

At 12:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Michèle Asselin, Ruth Rose-Lizée, Jane Stinson, Susan Russell, Nancy Baroni and Bonnie Diamond made statements and, with Fathiya Wais and Colleen Burns, answered questions.

 

At 12:59 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:00 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That consideration of the question on the discriminatory sign towards women raised by Sylvie Boucher be postponed until April 21, 2009.

 

At 1:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
