The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Lois Brown, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Glen Douglas Pearson and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Francine Lalonde for Paul Crête and Mario Silva for Hon. Bob Rae.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Ken Sunquist, Assistant Deputy Minister, (Asia and Africa) and Chief Trade Commissioner; Isabelle Roy, Director, West and Central Africa Division. Canadian International Development Agency: Allan Culham, Acting Vice-President, Pan-Geographics; André Gosselin, Regional Director, Central Africa and Great Lakes, Africa Branch. Entraide Missionnaire Inc.: Denis Tougas, Director of Programs for Africa, Table de concertation sur l'Afrique des Grands Lacs (Burundi, RDC, Rwanda). Development and Peace: Serge Blais, Program Officer, Africa, International Program Services. Alternatives Canada: Michel Lambert, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of key elements of Canadian foreign policy.
 

Ken Sunquist made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Denis Tougas, Serge Blais and Michel Lambert made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
