The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Lois Brown, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, James Lunney, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Glen Douglas Pearson, Hon. Bob Rae and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Jean Dorion for Paul Crête.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Albina Guarnieri.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Robert Dietz, Asia Program Coordinator, Committee to Protect Journalists. Canadian Tamil Congress: Harini Sivalingam, Policy Director; David Poopalapillai, Public Relations Director and National Spokesperson; Sharmila Rajasingam, Member. World Vision Canada: Jonathan Papoulidis, Senior Policy Advisor, Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Affairs.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of key elements of Canadian foreign policy.
 

Robert Dietz made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

Harini Sivalingam and David Papoulidis made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Fourth Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

Your Subcommittee met on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. That the Committee study a draft report on the situation in Sri Lanka on Monday, April 27, 2009;

2. That members of the Committee send their suggestions for witness to the Clerk for the meetings on Africa before April 3, 2009;

3. That members of the Committee send suggestions for possible meetings in Washington D.C. during the Committee's proposed trip from April 19 to 22, to the Clerk as soon as possible.

 

On motion of Bernard Patry, it was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
