The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Gary Ralph Schellenberger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Rod Bruinooge, Dean Del Mastro, Ruby Dhalla, Shelly Glover, Nina Grewal, Carole Lavallée, Roger Pomerleau, Gary Ralph Schellenberger and Tim Uppal.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Larry Bagnell for Scott Simms and Jean-Claude JC D'Amours for Pablo Rodriguez.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business in camera.
 

At 4:13 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:16 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Dean Del Mastro moved, — That the Standing Committee of Canadian Heritage calls to appear, at its earliest convenience, the following representatives from the Canada Council for the Arts: Director: Robert Sirman, Chairperson: Joseph L. Rotman and Vice Chair: Simon Brault, to provide information regarding the $13 million the Canada Council for the Arts has allocated to provide funds and resources to the arts community for international promotion and touring, and that the findings be reported back to the House and the vote be a public vote.

 

Dean Del Mastro moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “convenience” the following: “prior to the finalization of the Report”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Dean Del Mastro and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

Charlie Angus moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting the words “at its earliest convenience”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Charlie Angus and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

Dean Del Mastro moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “appear” the following: “as soon as possible”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Dean Del Mastro and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

Shelly Glover moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “appear” the following: “during the week of April 20th”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Shelly Glover and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

By unanimous consent, the motion was withdrawn.

 

Carole Lavallée moved, — That, as part of the study on the evolution of the television industry and further to announcements regarding CBC/SRC’s budget plan, the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage promptly invite Hubert T. Lacroix, President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, for a two-hour session on April 1, along with James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage, for a two-hour session on the following Monday, April 20, and that both sessions be televised.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 4:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
