The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:17 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley and Francis Valeriote.

 

Acting Members present: Bob Dechert for Brian Storseth.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Mathieu Frigon, Analyst. House of Commons: Jean-François Lafleur, Committee Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Competition Bureau: Denis Corriveau, Senior Competition Law Officer, Mergers Branch; Morgan Currie, Acting Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition, Mergers Branch; Adam Fanaki, Senior Deputy Commissioner, Mergers Branch. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Kathleen MacKay, Director, Technical Barriers and Regulations; Paul Robertson, Director General, North America Trade Policy. Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Blair Coomber, Director General, International Trade Policy Directorate; John Ross, Director, Animal Industry Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of Competitiveness of Canadian Agriculture.
 

Denis Corriveau, Morgan Currie and Adam Fanaki made statements and answered questions.

 

Alex Atamanenko moved, — That the Competition Bureau of Canada be ordered to provide in both official languages the documents as required by the motion passed by the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food on March 24th, 2009; and that the documents be provided to the Clerk of the Committee no later than September 18th, 2009.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 12:44 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 12:51, the Committee resumed sitting in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That supporting staff from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada be allowed to remain in the room notwithstanding the motion adopted on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 concerning staff at in camera meetings.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the situation of the red meat sector.
 

Kathleen MacKay, Paul Robertson, John Ross and Blair Coomber made statements and answered questions.

 

At 1:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
