The Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan met in a televised session at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Claude Bachand, Rick Casson, Paul Dewar, Laurie Hawn, Greg Kerr, Francine Lalonde, Dave MacKenzie, Deepak Obhrai and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Gerald Keddy for Laurie Hawn, Bernard Patry for Hon. Bob Rae and Borys Wrzesnewskyj for Hon. Denis Coderre.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst. House of Commons: Paul Cardegna, Procedural Clerk.

 

Appearing: Hon. Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's mission in Afghanistan.
 

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:09 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee defray the hospitality expenses related to working meals held during its travel to Washington D.C. April 23, 2009.

 

The Committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

 

It was agreed, — That the draft report be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair present the report to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerks and analysts be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the report and that the Government consider providing its response within 60 days considering the nature of the report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee append to its report dissenting and / or supplementary opinions from Members of the Committee provided that they are no more than two pages in length and submitted electronically, in both official languages, to the Clerk of the Committee, no later than 5: 30 p.m., on Monday, June 15, 2009 (Eastern daylight time).

 

At 12:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
