The Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan met in camera at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Claude Bachand, Rick Casson, Hon. Denis Coderre, Paul Crête, Paul Dewar, Laurie Hawn, Greg Kerr, Dave MacKenzie, Deepak Obhrai, Hon. Bob Rae and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst. House of Commons: Angela Crandall, Committee Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: Alan Howard, Brigadier-General; Denis William Thompson, Brigadier-General.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee focus on the issues of: on-going training for the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police; Justice and the new Shia family law in Afghanistan; and that the Committee hear witnesses on these subjects until the House of Commons adjourns for summer, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee direct the analysts to write a report of the Committee’s trip to Washington, D.C.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee direct the analysts to prepare a draft report with recommendations on the training of the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade, Minister of the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Afghanistan, to appear before the Committee, if possible, on June 4 or June 11, 2009, in response to the motion adopted on April 30, 2009, and to comment on the document “Canada's Engagement in Afghanistan, Report to Parliament, September 2008” in his capacity as Chair of the Cabinet Committee on Afghanistan.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite Chris Alexander and Elissa Goldberg to appear, if possible, before the Committee on May 28, 2009.

 

At 11:10 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:11 a.m., the sitting resumed in public in a televised session.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's mission in Afghanistan.
 

BGen. Alan Howard and BGen. Dennis Thompson made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
