The Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Claude Bachand, Rick Casson, Paul Dewar, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Laurie Hawn and Hon. Bob Rae.

 

Acting Members present: Jean Dorion for Francine Lalonde, Cheryl Gallant for Dave MacKenzie, Peter Goldring for Deepak Obhrai, Jack Harris for Paul Dewar and Hon. Keith Martin for Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Christine Kostiuk, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Embassy of Canada to the United States of America: Richard Colvin, First Secretary. As an individual: Lori Bokenfohr, Legal Counsel. Military Police Complaints Commission: Peter A. Tinsley, Chair.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 10, 2009, and the two motions adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the transfer of Afghan detainees from the Canadian Forces to Afghan authorities, as part of its consideration of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.
 

Richard Colvin made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:09 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Peter A. Tinsley made a statement.

 

It was agreed, — That Peter A. Tinsley, Chair of the Military Police Complaints Commission, be invited to appear again before the Special Committee at a later date in order to answer questions from members, as part of the study on the transfer of Afghan detainees.

 

At 5:21 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
