The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met in a televised session at 11:04 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Omar Alghabra, Mike Allen, David Anderson, Catherine Bell, Leon Benoit, Ken Boshcoff, Claude DeBellefeuille, Lloyd St. Amand, Alan Tonks and Bradley R. Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Guy André for Christian Ouellet and Cheryl Gallant for Richard Harris.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst; Fréderic Beauregard-Tellier, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources.

 

Witnesses: Department of Natural Resources: Sue Kirby, Assistant Deputy Minister, Energy Sector; Tom Wallace, Director General, Electricity Resources Branch. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited: Hugh MacDiarmid, President and Chief Executive Officer.

 

Participants present: Atomic Energy of Canada Limited: Allen Hawryluk, General Counsel.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on June 3, 2008, the Committee commenced its study of the decision of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and the Government to discontinue the MAPLE reactors project and its ramifications on the supply of isotopes.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:05 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Hugh MacDiarmid made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
