The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Paul Crête, Dean Del Mastro, Rick Dykstra, Jean-Yves Laforest, Hon. John McCallum, Hon. John McKay, Ted Menzies, Rob Merrifield, Massimo Pacetti and Mike Wallace.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Rick Dykstra, Martha Hall Findlay for Hon. Garth Turner, Peter Julian for Thomas J. Mulcair and Carole Lavallée for Jean-Yves Laforest.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Alexandre Laurin, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Murray Candlish; Larry Elford; Wynne Miles; Diane Urquhart, Independent Consulting Analyst. Beaver Creek Housing Co-operative: Steven Furino, Treasurer. Coalition pour la protection des investisseurs: Robert Pouliot, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer; Andrée De Serres, Director, University of Quebec in Montreal, School of Science management.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, the Committee proceeded to a briefing on Asset-Backed Commercial Paper in Canada.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

Paul Crête moved, — That the Committee give priority to examining the issue of asset-backed commercial papers over the coming months, excluding its consideration of the budget implementation act (Bill C-50) or any other order of reference from the House.

Debate arose thereon.

 

By unanimous consent, after debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 11:03 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
