The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met by videoconference at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Vivian Barbot, Hon. Raymond Chan, Johanne Deschamps, Peter Goldring, Wajid Khan, Denis Lebel, Hon. Keith Martin, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Hon. Bob Rae and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Wayne Marston for Paul Dewar.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal; Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: York University: Gregory T. Chin, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Department of Political Science; Bernie Michael Frolic, Professor Emeritus, Political Science Department. As an individual: Jeremy Paltiel, Professor, Carleton University. University of British Columbia: Pitman Potter, Professor of Law and Director of the Institute of Asian Research , Director of Chinese Legal Studies, Centre for Asian Legal Studies. International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy: Daniel C. Préfontaine, President.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on April 1, 2008 the Committee resumed its study on Canada-China Bilateral Human Rights Dialogue
 

Pitman Potter, Gregory T. Chin and Jeremy Paltiel made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Daniel C. Préfontaine and Bernie Michael Frolic made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the Ninth Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

That the Committee continue studying the draft report on Afghanistan during the meetings on June 3 and June 5, 2008;

That the Committee continue studying the draft report on Afghanistan during the meeting of June 10, unless they have completed the report and then they will continue studying the draft report on China.

 

On motion of Denis Lebel, it was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
