The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Gord Brown, Joe Comartin, Laurie Hawn, Mark Holland, Dave MacKenzie, Serge Ménard and Rick Norlock.

 

Acting Members present: France Bonsant for Carole Freeman and Brent St. Denis for Hon. Raymond Chan.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada (PSEPC): Michael Baker, Director General, Preparedness and Recovery; James Deacon, Director General, National Security Policy; Robert Lesser, Director General, Operations; Tracy Thiessen, Director General, Coordination; Suki Wong, Deputy Director General, Critical Infrastructure Policy; David C. Neville, Director, Disaster Financial Assistance and Preparedness Programs.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Friday, September 22, 2006, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-12, An Act to provide for emergency management and to amend and repeal certain Acts.
 

James Deacon made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:45 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:46 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The Committee proceeded to discuss matters related to its business.

 

It was agreed, — That the Canadian Nuclear Association and provincial hydro electricity providers be invited to appear before the Committee in relation to their study on Bill C-12.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee visit the Government Operations Center.

 

At 10:52 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
