NEWS RELEASE
COMMITTEE WILL BE TRAVELING TO WESTERN CANADA FROM DECEMBER 4 TO 7, 2006
Ottawa, November 14, 2006 -
As part of its study on the vitality of official language minority communities, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Official Languages will be traveling to Western Canada from December 4 to 7, 2006. Seven of the 12 committee members will be stopping in Vancouver on December 4, Edmonton on December 5, Regina on December 6 and Saint-Boniface on December 7, to meet with representatives from francophone community organizations. About 30 organizations have been invited to give evidence before the Committee. Please note that all committee meetings will be public. As part of this study, the Committee also traveled to the Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario from November 6 to10, 2006.
The goal of the study is to examine the practical results of the Official Languages Action Plan from 2003 to 2008, which targeted investments of more than $750 million. Discussions will focus on the following themes: education, health, immigration, economic development, early childhood education, justice and community and cultural life, as well as relations between the communities and governments. The Committee's report will be tabled in the House of Commons in the spring of 2007.
This is a first for the Committee which has never before in its 26-year history had an opportunity to travel to meet with minority anglophone or francophone communities.
