The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:39 p.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, France Bonsant, Patrick Brown, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Ruby Dhalla, Mike Lake, Yves Lessard, Gary Merasty, Michael Savage and Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Members present: Scott Simms for Ruby Dhalla and Hon. Robert Thibault for Mario Silva.

 

Associate Members present: Denise Savoie.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Analyst. House of Commons: Christine Lafrance, Committee Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Council on Learning: Paul Cappon, President and Chief Executive Officer. Fédération canadienne pour l'alphabétisation en français: Gaétan Cousineau, Director General. Canadian Labour Congress: Karl Flecker, National Director, Anti-Racism and Human Rights Department. Police Sector Council: Geoff Gruson, Executive Director. Canadian Paraplegic Association: Ellen Hicks, Director, Advocacy and Communications; David B. Hinton, Executive Director, National Office - Ottawa. Canadian Labour Congress: Hassan Yussuff, Secretary-Treasurer.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, May 11, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of Employability in Canada.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Yves Lessard moved, — That the Committee recommend that the Government maintain, as is, the budget and format of the Summer Career Placement Program, that the Government transfer the administration of the program to the provinces that so wish it, and that a report of the adoption of this motion be made to the House as soon as possible .

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
