The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 3:38 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dave Batters, Hon. Carolyn Bennett, Bonnie Brown, Patricia Davidson, Rick Dykstra, Steven John Fletcher, Christiane Gagnon, Susan Kadis, Luc Malo and Rob Merrifield.

 

Acting Members present: Harold Albrecht for Steven John Fletcher, Pat Martin for Penny Priddy, Louis Plamondon for Luc Malo and Hon. Belinda Stronach for Colleen Beaumier.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst; Odette Madore, Analyst; Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst.

 

At 3:40 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Christiane Gagnon moved, — That, whereas the Standing Committee on Health will, in the coming weeks, begin a study on prescription drugs; whereas the Common Drug Review has been conducting reviews since 2003 and has been making recommendations to the provinces as regards to prescription drugs that should be covered by publicly funded drug plans; and whereas this review process overlaps with processes that already exist in every province, thus duplicating responsibilities and costs; therefore, it is recommended that the Standing Committee on Health write a letter to the Auditor General for Canada asking her to look into the mandate, costs, management and effectiveness of the Common Drug Review.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Rick Dykstra moved, — That the motion be amended by adding the words “,after the Committee has completed an examination of the Common Drug Review as part of its study on Prescription Drugs,” after the words “recommended that”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Rick Dykstra and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 8.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 8; NAYS: 3.

 

At 3:55 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Childhood Obesity.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
