The Subcommittee on Public Safety and National Security of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness met in a televised session at 1:35 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Paul Zed, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Joe Comartin, Peter MacKay, Serge Ménard, Kevin Sorenson and Paul Zed.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Don Boudria for Tom Wappel and John Maloney for Roy Cullen .

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Civil Liberties Union: Denis Barrette, Legal Counsel. Canadian Association of University Teachers: James Turk, Executive Director; Maureen Webb, Legal Officer. Federation of Law Societies of Canada: George Hunter, Vice-President; Katherine Corrick, Director, Policy and Legal Affairs. Canadian Bar Association: Greg P. DelBigio, Vice-Chair National, Criminal Justice Section; Tamra L. Thomson, Director, Legislation and Law Reform.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of November 22, 2004, the Subcommittee resumed its study of the Anti-terrorism Act, Impact of the Anti-terrorism Act on Rights and Freedoms.
 

Denis Barrette, James Turk and Maureen Webb made statements and answered questions.

 

At 3:12 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:30 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

George Hunter and Greg BelBigio made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:49 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
