The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:39 a.m. this day, in Room 307 West Block, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Raynald Blais, John Cummins, Rodger Cuzner, Loyola Hearn, Randy Kamp, Gerald Keddy, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Scott Simms, Peter Stoffer and Tom Wappel.

 

Acting Members present: David A. Anderson for Shawn Murphy, David A. Anderson for Scott Simms, Gérard Asselin for Jean-Yves Roy, Don H. Bell for Shawn Murphy and James Bezan for Randy Kamp.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst; Alan Nixon, Principal.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

John Cummins moved, — That the Committee table a report in the House recommending that a judicial inquiry be undertaken into the management of the 2004 Fraser River sockeye fisheries and disappearance of almost two million sockeye between Mission and the spawning grounds.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Gerald Keddy moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting all of the words after the word “fisheries”.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Gerald Keddy and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: David A. Anderson, James Bezan, John Cummins, Rodger Cuzner, Loyola Hearn, Gerald Keddy, Scott Simms — 7; NAYS: Raynald Blais, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy — 3.

 

The question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was negatived on the following recorded division: YEAS: James Bezan, John Cummins, Loyola Hearn, Gerald Keddy, Peter Stoffer — 5; NAYS: David A. Anderson, Raynald Blais, Rodger Cuzner, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Scott Simms — 6.

 

John Cummins moved, — That the Committee recommend that Bryan Williams be removed as chair of the Integrated Salmon Harvest Planning Committee, and that a neutral chair be appointed in his stead.

 

After debate, by unanimous consent, the motion was withdrawn.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:10 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee resumed consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 11:33 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
