The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in a televised session at 4:07 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Lawrence MacAulay, Dan McTeague, Ted Menzies, Pierre A. Paquette, Bernard Patry, Beth Phinney, Kevin Sorenson and Belinda Stronach.

 

Acting Members present: Peter Julian for Alexa McDonough, Jean-Yves Roy for Francine Lalonde and Peter Stoffer for Alexa McDonough.

 

Associate Members present: Mark Eyking.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal; Peter Berg, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Jim Peterson, Minister of International Trade.

 

Witnesses: Department of International Trade Canada: Robert Fonberg, Deputy Minister of International Trade; Kathryn E. McCallion, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services, Passport and Consular Affairs; John Gero, Assistant Deputy Minister, Trade, Economic, Environmental Policy and Chief Trade Negotiator for the World Trade Organization; Paul Thoppil, Director General, Corporate Planning (Strategic Policy and Corporate Planning).

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4),and the motion adopted by the Committee on October 20, 2004 the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2004-2005: Votes number 1, 5, 10 and 15 under International Trade referred to the Committee on Friday, October 8, 2004.
 

The Order of Reference of October 8, 2004 being read as follows :

ORDERED, - Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2005, were deemed referred to the several Standing Committees of the House as follows: To Foreign Affairs and International Trade (Foreign Affairs), Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, L25, L30, 35 and 40 International Trade, Votes 1, 5, 10 and 15.”

 

The Chair called Vote 1 under International Trade.

 

The Minister made a statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:41 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
