ASSEMBLY OF FIRST NATIONS NATIONAL CHIEF TO APPEAR BEFORE THE HOUSE ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE ON KYOTO

Ottawa, April 08, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine, will be appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. The subject to be discussed is Canada's implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.

The Kyoto Protocol came into force on 16 February, 2005. Canada is currently in the process of determining how to meet its Kyoto target and an updated plan is to be released on 13 April, 2005. The Committee is currently undertaking an in-depth study of how to fairly and effectively attain emissions reductions.

Climate change is already having an impact on Canada’s north and in the future this change will accelerate. The Assembly of First Nations has new capacity to engage on climate change and it continues to support greenhouse gas mitigation activities such as renewable energy and energy efficiency activities, projects and actions, and related policy implications.

The meeting is to take place Tuesday, 12 April between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. in room 237-C, Centre Block on Parliament Hill.
