Bill C-43 and Changes to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act
Ottawa, March 31, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development will be holding a special meeting to examine the changes to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA) as proposed in Bill C-43, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 23, 2005.
The proposed changes will remove the word “toxic” from CEPA and could have implications, not only for how the government is addressing climate change, but how it will be able to prevent pollution and protect the environment and human health through the amended Act.
The witnesses will include the deputy minister of the environment, Samy Watson as well as departmental officials. The meeting is to take place Tuesday, 5 April between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in room 209, West Block on Parliament Hill.
