Minister of Public Works and Government Services to appear before the House Environment Committee on Kyoto
Ottawa, February 21, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that the Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services will be appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. The subject to be discussed is “Canada's Implementation of the Kyoto Protocol - Part I - Setting the Stage: The Current Situation”.
The Kyoto Protocol came into force on 16 February, 2005. Canada is currently in the process of determining how to meet its Kyoto target and there is widespread agreement that the Government of Canada's 2002 Climate Change Plan needs to be changed in order to make it more effective. The Committee is currently engaged in an in-depth study on how to fairly and effectively attain emissions reductions.
In order to achieve emissions reductions in Canada as a whole, it is essential for the government to show leadership by cutting its own emissions, 80% of which come from buildings. The Department of Public Works and Government Services is the government's primary landlord, custodian, procurement agent and lead department for the Federal House in Order initiative, which is the federal government’s in-house program to reduce green house gas emissions.
The meeting is to take place Tuesday, 22 February between 11:00 and 13:00 in room 237-C, Centre Block on Parliament Hill.
