The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C Centre Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Charlie Angus, James Bezan, Claude Drouin, Wayne Easter, Mark Eyking, Roger Gaudet, Larry Miller, Denise Poirier-Rivard, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

 

Acting Members present: Diane Finley for Gerry Ritz and Alan Tonks for Mark Eyking.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal; Marc LeBlanc, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Andy Mitchell, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2005-2006, Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD referred to the Committee on Friday, February 25, 2005.
 

The Chair called Vote 1 under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD.

 

The minister made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The witnesses answered questions.

 

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD.

 

Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD carried.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair report Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40, less the amounts voted in Interim Supply, under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD to the House.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

David L. Anderson moved, — That the Auditor General be requested to audit federal spending on the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization Program thus far.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 4.

 

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
