The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Chair, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Cleary, Jeremy Harrison, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gary Lunn, Pat Martin, Jim Prentice, David Smith, Lloyd St. Amand and Roger Valley.

 

Acting Members present: Yvon Lévesque for André Bellavance and Judi Longfield for Sue Barnes.

 

Associate Members present: Bev Desjarlais.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst; Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As Individuals: Allan Aitken; Raven Thundersky. Assembly of First Nations: Lance Haymond, Chief, AFN/QL Eagle Village, member of National Chiefs Committee on Housing and Infrastructure; Carl Johnson, Senior Housing Consultant, National Office. Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development : Gilles Rochon, Director General, Infrastructure and Housing; Jules Hébert, Director, Housing; Susan Burgess, Counsel, Legal Services. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation: Bill Smith, Vice-President, Assisted Housing; Deborah Taylor, Director, Assisted Housing Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study on asbestos laden vermiculite on reserves.
 

Raven Thundersky, Allan Aitken and Lance Haymond made statements and, with Carl Johnson, answered questions.

 

At 12:17 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:23 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Gilles Rochon and Bill Smith made statements and answered questions.

 

At 1:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
