The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in camera at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 705 La Promenade Building, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gérard Binet, Paul Crête, Hon. Joe Fontana, Hon. Gurbax Malhi, Brian Masse, Grant McNally, James Rajotte, Carol Skelton, Brent St. Denis and Hon. Lyle Vanclief.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lalita Acharya, Analyst; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the members of the Committee submit electronically to the Clerk of the Committee all of their proposed amendments to Bill C-9 no later than 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2004, and that the Government amendments be circulated electronically to members of the Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-9 take place as planned on Thursday, March 25, 2004; that, if necessary, it resume on Tuesday, March 30, 2004; and that, if the clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-9 is completed, departmental officials be invited to give the Committee a briefing on Bill C-2, An Act to amend the Radiocommunication Act, on Tuesday, March 30, 2004.

 

It was agreed, — That the Minister of Industry be invited to appear on the Main Estimates on Thursday, April 1st, 2004.

 

It was agreed, — That, if the Government provides an answer on this day, no meeting be held on the failure of the Ministry to respond to James Rajotte's written question Q-20 which was deemed referred to the Committee on Monday, March 22, 2004, pursuant to Standing Order 39(5)(b).

 

It was agreed, — That pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the following witness: Ms. Michele M. McKenzie, President of the Canadian Tourism Commission, be invited to appear before the Committee at the first opportunity.

 

It was agreed, — That pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the following witness: Ms. Sheridan Scott, Commissioner of Competition, be invited to appear before the Committee at the first opportunity.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee undertake a study on the impact of international competition on Canada's manufacturing industry; that, at the first opportunity, a meeting be scheduled with officials from the Department of Industry; and that a workplan for this study be prepared by the analysts.

 

At 11:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
