The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in camera at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Chair, Sarmite Bulte, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Carole-Marie Allard, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Jeannot Castonguay, Christiane Gagnon, Gurmant Grewal, John Harvard, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Wendy Lill, Clifford Lincoln and Gary Schellenberger.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sam Banks, Analyst; Monique Hébert, Analyst; Joseph Jackson, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Hélène Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Judith A. LaRocque, Deputy Minister; Susan Peterson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Cutural Affairs.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That we invite the Auditor General of Canada to appear before the Committee during a televised meeting, if possible, to address us on the question of the National Library and the National Archives, as stated in her letter dated March 3, 2004 and in her 2003 annual report, tabled in the House of Commons on February 10, 2004.

 

At 4:08 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 4:11 p.m., the Committee resumed sitting in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 24, 2004, the Committee proceeded to a briefing session with the Minister of Canadian Heritage.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:39 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
