The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 705 La Promenade Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: John Cummins, Loyola Hearn, Carmen Provenzano, Jean-Yves Roy, Gary Schellenberger, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer, Tom Wappel and Bob Wood.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst; Alan Nixon, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Canadian SableFish Association: Eric Wickham, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) , the Committee commenced its briefing session by a representative from the Canadian SableFish Association.
 

At 11:05 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:13 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:13 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:18 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded in camera to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 
It was agreed, — That the Chairman write a letter to the Minister encouraging him to have an environmental assessment done before the sablefish aquaculture industry is allowed to proceed, recommending that he instruct Allison Webb, a department official responsible for aquaculture on the west coast, to meet immediately with representatives of the SableFish Association and suggest that controls be placed on the export of live sablefish.
 
It was agreed, — That the Chairman write a letter to David Rideout, Executive Director of the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, recommending that he meet with representatives of the SableFish Association.
 

It was agreed, — That the following witnesses: David Bevan, Assistant Deputy Minister and Jean-Claude Bouchard, Associate Deputy Minister from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans be invited to appear before the Committee, after the May break week, to give evidence concerning sablefish and the aquaculture industry and that Allison Webb be invited to appear at the same time by way of a teleconference .

 
It was agreed, — That the Committee review the evidence received from the United Fishermen & Allied Workers’ Union, April 27, 2004.
 
It was agreed, — That the Chairman send a letter to the Minister recommending that a meaningful dialogue be held between department officials and representatives of the Canadian Responsible Fisheries Federation explaining why their funding was cut.
 
It was agreed, — That representatives of the Rouge Dauffins Green Space Coalition be invited to appear before Committee in a televised meeting concerning damage to the Rouge River watershed.
 
It was agreed, — That the Committee's next major study will be on the Oceans Act.
 

At 12:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
