Meeting No. 13

Tuesday, February 4, 2003

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 9:05 a.m. this day, (in a video recording session) in Room 371, West Block, the acting Chair, John McKay, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Hon. Hedy Fry, Marlene Jennings, Derek Lee, Paul Harold Macklin, Richard Marceau, John McKay, The Hon. Andy Scott, Kevin Sorenson.

Acting Members present: Réal Ménard for Pierrette Venne, Svend Robinson for Bill Blaikie.

Other Member: Monte Solberg.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, senior analyst, Kristen Douglas, analyst.

Witnesses: From the Ontario Human Rights Commission: Keith Norton, Chief Commissioner. From Egale Canada: John Fisher, Director of Advocacy; Laurie Arron, Chair, Equal Marriage Committee. As Individual: Prof. Michel Morin, Faculty of Law, Ottawa University.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on marriage and the legal recognition of same-sex unions.

The witnesses made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:50 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
