Meeting No. 29

Monday, April 7, 2003

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, James Lunney, Réal Ménard, Carol Skelton and Yolande Thibeault.

Other Member present: John McKay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, research officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs: Donald F. Warden, Fire Chief and Chairman, Government Relations Committee. From the Imperial Tobacco Canada Limited: Donald McCarty, Vice-President, Law; Stewart Massey, Director, Scientific Affairs; Gaetan Duplessis, Director, Products Development. From Klein Lyons, Barristers & Solicitors: Douglas Lennox, Lawyer. From the Non-Smokers' Rights Association: François Damphousse, Director, Quebec Office, and Representative, Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Thursday, November 28, 2002, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-260, An Act to amend the Hazardous Products Act (fire-safe cigarettes) (See Minutes of Proceedings, Wednesday, February 12, 2003, Meeting No. 20).

Donald F. Warden, Donald McCarty, Douglas Lennox and François Damphousse made statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
