Meeting No. 34

Friday, February 14, 2003

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:37 a.m. this day, in the Grand Ballroom CD, Sheraton Fredericton Hotel, Fredericton, New Brunswick, the Vice-Chair, Jerry Pickard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Diane Ablonczy, John Bryden, Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral, Jerry Pickard.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: David Goetz, research officer.

Witnesses: From the New Brunswick Multicultural Council Inc.: George Maicher, Vice President. From the Multicultural Association of Fredericton: Judy Loo, Member of the Board of Directors. From Pride of Race Unity Dignity through Education:  Idee Inyangudor, Training and Development Officer.   As an individual: David McMath. From the Government of New Brunswick: Hon. Norman Betts, Minister, Business New Brunswick. From the New Brunswick Multicultural Council Inc.: Christine Nassrallah, President.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Friday, November 8, 2002, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-18, An Act respecting Canadian citizenship (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, November 21, 2002, Meeting No. 6).

David McMath, Idee Inyangudor, Judy Loo and George Maicher made statements and answered questions.

At 11:01 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:04 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of Provincial / Territorial Nominee Programs (See Minutes of Proceedings, Monday, February 10, 2003, Meeting No. 18).

Hon. Norman Betts made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:06 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:09 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Christine Nassrallah made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
